Saturday I removed the tank, rear fender and front fender from my '02 Standard for repainting (ghost blue flames -- WILL post pics after it is complete ).
When I removed the fuel valve (S L O W L Y) I couldn't believe the amount of debris that it had collected, for a bike with < 7000 miles (see pic). It was actually worse than what the pic shows, draining gas washed a lot of the debris out when I dropped the filter down.
Is this normal? Looks like oxidation from inside the tank to me. Should I replace the filter while it is out or just wash it out/re-install? The filter looks okay other than the amount of grunge it has collected...
I may ask the painter if there is anything he can do prior to painting to blow out the interior of the tank. There is probably more of this stuff in there.
This is what happens when a bike or any gas tank sits up for long periods of time without proper treatment. 7000 miles on an 02 says that this bike sits allot, allowing for condensation to form inside the tank... and since very few motorcycle tanks are treated inside to inhibit corrosion this is the result. Have your painter clean the inside of the tank then treat it to avoid this happening again... also, whenever the bike is sitting be sure that the tank is full or completely empty and vented.
