Default Fatboy front wheel spacing issues

ok, i am doing a friend a favor and doing a quick pre-summer service for him. he has a 1995 fatboy and i changed his fork oil and seals. went to reinstall the front wheel and noticed the tire is like 1/8" from the the fender on the right side of the front end, and almost 1+" on the left(brake side). i don't have a manual but done several before. i have undone everything several times and went through it slowy step by step and can't seem to figure out why. i was very confident in my mechanic skills before this and now i'm at a total loss. speedo spacer is install correctly on left side and the other spacer on the right. i have to very slightly pry the forks apart abit to get the wheel and spacers up there together. any help is highly appreciated!!!!!

I read somewhere else off a google that you need to space out your front right fork from the right spacer correctly, but I can't find this in my service manual. They were saying use a 7/16" drill bit in the axle holes and pull your right fork just touching it. Then tighten down your slider cap nuts on the bottom of the fork to spec.
  • Anyone read this as well and does this pertain to softails? My service manual says nothing about spacing the right front fork correctly and using a 7/16" drill bit. I have an 07 NT. Thanks!

Dale

I have a 2002 Fatboy. My manual doesn't say anything about a gap for my 2002. But it does mention a gap of 7/64 on the 2004-05 Fatboy SE. This is to ensure that the full floating rotor on the SE is allowed to move as needed to remain centered in the caliper. I set mine at 1/64. Just to keep things from binding.

I have an idea that since he posted this thread on 08-05-2009, 09:09 AM, about 10 1/2 years ago, he might already have figured out what he needs to know.

You might want to start a new thread on your axle spacing as this thread started in 2009 and the last post was in 2020. You might get more responses that way.

And, if you don't have a factory service manual you should get one. Personally, I don't think either picture represents how the axle should be positioned when things are installed correctly with the correct parts in place.

Both pictures show an incorrect assembly.
