Has anyone added a side mounted License plate frame with lights to their Rocker? if so where did you tap into the power. According to the instructions it shows Black=ground, Blue= Brake, Red=Running light. Its generic so it acts as if you tap into the existing lights at the tail light. But of course our lights are only at the turn signals Do you tap into the power at the left rear turn signal? or chase it all the way back to the harness?
Thanks for your tips or any other help.
yes i have i ran power right off the original wires
i think it was the middle wire, anyway pulled that wire out & spliced into it.
piece of cake .you will have to pull fender off,1st unplug harness (its under seat)
4 bolts fender off then you can see the wire.i used the famous wont fit kurykn
curved side mount for dyna/sportster 3173 part#,but i would recommend
top down's swing arm mount as it looks great.the bracket i used had to be modified,
this was due to the rocker being newer and noone had parts that fit it
hmmmmmmm.... good luck
The one I ordered looks to mount directly to the axle bolt, does the swingarm bracket you talk about attach to a frame that has the Axle mount?
The one I purchased, has running light, and brake light wires, so I would need or want to hook up both options if I can tap into both wires.
Oh! and another question, what did you do to cover up the original license plate location? At this point I would just leave the fixture but remove the metal bracket to make it look somewhat normal without having to plug holes and repaint.
are you going w/ top down product??
they're new one attaches to the swing arm
coverin up holes there are many options
HD emblem,spikes,kurykn tribal chrome thangy,
etc. etc.i had mine redone holes filled in repainted
Side mount is very easy to install. Remove the fender, take off the license/running light assembly, and pull the wire for that assembly back through the spine underneath the fender. Use plastic ties to hold it to the frame and run it to the new side mount assembly.
Once you remove the license/running light mount assembly from the fender you have four holes in your fender that need to be covered or welded closed. IMHO leaving the assembly on the fender will look out of place.
Mike mentioned the Top Down Products Swingarm Mount, they also have an axle mount that is easy to install.
I agree with m i k e and Dragon. Those guys got some experience. I have that axle nut kit on my bike....just waiting for fricking fender paint. That kit runs about 24. or so....I had my mount thing measured and welded and went with a Radiantz license plate holder with 6 LED's(one day I will get to hook it up!).
excellent info here, thanks guys. I guess the easiest fix for the left behind holes is to find some sort of badge/tribal chrome thingy to put on the back.
