Default Shock Adjustment

Does anybody play around with the rear shock adjustment on thier Heritage. You know for two up riding then for single rider etc. Is it a big deal to do and yes I have the manual. I know you need a spanner wrench and you have to be careful to have both shocks adjusted the same but is there much difference in ride quality?

It's pretty easy to do and yes it does make a pretty big difference.
Typically we have found that most/average American should have the preload turned up about half way. Especially if it's then lowered at all.

Jeff, When looking at the shock adjustment ring, which way stiffens (clockwise or counter-clockwise) the preload? I would like to give it a twist or two but I don't want to spend half a day trying to figure it out.

Thanks

truning out the ajuster plates increases the spring preload for a heavier load turning the ajuster plates in decreases the preload for a softer ride to carry less weigh. you need a spanner wrench part # p4455-89 for softail's to do this. Hope this helps.

Absolutely correct camp, when talking to customers this is the basis for the most confusion, the Softail shocks works in a pull-push configuration; meaning they pull apart under the compression stroke and compress under the rebound stroke.
When adjusting preload, remember the fewer the threads showing the stiffer the preload on the spring.

Good luck, ride safe.

I took some brite orange paint and put a dot on that thingy that turns so as to get em aligned up the same.

Pay attention when turning them. Dont think about nothing else, or youl be saying (as I did) dang, was that one turn or 2 ???? . [8D]
