Default Shock tuning??

Which way do i turn the rear shocks to get a softer ride?
I realize it is what it is, but I do see different settings on the shock.
Do I need a wrench for it?

yes, you don't absolutely have to use a wrench, but it makes it a lot easier. To soften the ride, you reduce the pre-load ( not near the bike right now, but believe it's counterclockwise) looking at the lower spring retainer, you should be able to visualize which position would extend the spring the furthest.

Softest would be at the upper notch that you see.
You don't have to use a shock wrench but it's usually easier. Going to a sofeter setting is the easiest to turn. Possibly by hand if you're pretty strong.
