If you can find a new Thundermax with AutoTune for $400, please post the link! It normally goes for $900. But you don't need the dealer to install it. It's simple to do yourself. If you change ONLY your air cleaner or ONLY your pipes, you don't NEED a fuel management system (although your bike will run better with one.) If you change your AC AND your pipes, you definitely need one.

You will definitely need to buy a fuel management system if you are going to dyno the bike. Like others have said though; if you are just changing the AC and pipes then you can get by with a Fuel Pak from V&H and a set tune if they have one for your set up.

If you are going for a full FM system I like the TTS Mastertune. You can tune your own bike with a laptop computer for under $400. If you choose to dyno it later you can. Anyone dyno guy who knows how to use the SE products knows how to use the TTS.

I'm more confused now then when I started. What, specifically, does the dyno do for me?

A dyno lets the bike operate like it would in driving condition, be it a race or street driving. It monitors the bike's fuel map, rpm, hourse power, torque, etc. Then the tuner makes adjustments and tunes the bike. Thats about as simple as I can explain it.
The fuel management systems creat a way to make changes to the fuel map. Like turning screws on an old carburtaor. For the little work you are doing, most systems can just download a map from a computer and get away without doing a dyno run. Imo, your still better off getting it dynoed. A good tuner will get more out of it then just a pre loaded map.

a dyno run is about $40 and a dyno tune is about $300. the run only tell you what the hp and tq are at certain rpm
a dyno tune requires a few hr to adjust the bike for different speeds and rpm and gears
an auto tune system will adjust all the time including altitude changes and fuel changes and how much weight you gain. think of it as good, better, best

Are you sure you+the dealer are on the same page? A full dyno tune would usually call for the installation of a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner+then having your bike put on the dyno and properly tuned.

maybe tell us what year your bike is and if it is new or used. maybe it has a carb, maybe the dealer installed sert for the prior owner

The bike is brand new - 2009 Night Train. At purchase, I had dealer install V&H Big Shot Staggered (http://www.vanceandhines.com/product...sstag-blk.html) and a ST3 Big Bore. From the invoice, it says they did a "Stage 1" exhaust service and a custom fuel map (which I take to be the Dyno?)

So now I have a V&H Drak Air Filter ready to be installed. I am scheduled for a Dyno next week so I could install the Drak and then get the Dyno tune. I had thought that the Dyno tune at the dealer would optimize whatever set up I had on when they ran it.

So, if I go as planned and install the Drak and get the Dyno, do I still need some type of autotune device? And if I do get autotune system, do I need another Dyno tune again after that is installed?

All the help is much appreciated. Yes I think I got ahead of myself with all this work but learning a lot very quickly.

there should be something on the invoice that they sold you that says what they installed or will install at the dyno tune. if you are not sure then call them and ask them what fuel management they are using for the dyno tune. if you get a autotune fuel management you dont need a dyno tune as that is what a autotune does.

Default Just had my Train Dyno'd

I just had a Screamin’ Eagle Pro EFI Super Tuner put on my 06 Train and had it dyno'd. The Tuner was $459.00 installed and Dyno tuning for 4.2 hours at $75.00 an hour. My bike was running like chit, poor gas mileage. I do have some mods, ie: cams, cam gears, super sucker, thunder header. All I can say when I got my scooter back on Saturday holly hell what an improvement, it dyno'd at 86 hp and 90 lbs of torque. Pulls hard through out the range revs faster, best $800.00 i've spent. Very Very pleased. Chaz and some of the other guys on here told me to do it, glad I did.
