I guess what I was looking for with this thread is a good comparison between the fatboy, which I really want, and a touring bike, or Heritage, which seem like they might be more practical and appropriate for my size/needs.
Softail is a roomier bike for big men John....

Well in my opinion, if you're going to be riding more for work and fun and not so much the long overnight trips...get a Softail. They're much more fun and you can do a lot with them. And since you've already stated SEVERAL TIMES that you like the Fatboy...get the Fatboy. By the way, you're gonna miss that old reliable Sporty. I tried to trade mine in too...didn't do it and I'm happy I didn't do it. Good luck and I'm sure you'll end up with a bike you love...no matter which Harley you choose!

I didn't know this, I guess from an eye-ball view the RKC looked bigger, but I think I'll be able to tell the difference today!

I don't have a long inseam, only 30", I have a long (and unfortunately wide lol) torso/waist, so the big seat will certainly help.

Have you sat on a Deluxe yet? Nice big seat on the Deluxe and I love the retro look. And...it's a Softail.

With a 30" inseam you wont benefit quite as much as the longer legged big guys....

See A softail can sit you down and back farther than a touring chassis hence giving you a bit more of that stretched out leg classic "Biker Guy" seating position. You kinda sit down, back and "In" a softail where you sit Up, Foward and "On" on a Road King or touring bike chassis....

OK, my 2 cents. Short inseam would tilt your choice to the fatty or the Heritage. The Heritage seat is 25 inches from the ground and the Road King is close to 27 inches. I chose my Heritage (07) because I like the dresser look and because I can ride to do errands and I can ride on any highway I want for as long as I want. It is a very agile bike even thought it looks big. No complaints here.

Thank you for your wonderful replies. Its really giving me some things to think about, such as the seat height. I wasn't paying as much attention as I should've been when I was looking at the bikes on Saturday, so I'm glad I'm getting some Ideas on what I need to pay attention to when I ride them today.

Sounds like you're used to riding without a windshield and bags...and it seems like the Fatboy is calling your name. If that's the bike you want, go grab it! You will always wonder about other bikes you could have had, but you can only pick one, so make sure it's the one YOU want. I have never ridden a Fatboy, so I can't really compare it to the Heritage. I ride to work most days, do some 2-up riding, long rides, and really like the look of the Heritage, so that's why I bought it. Anything will feel better than your 350-lb frame on an 883 Sporty! I honestly can't believe you've made it this long on that thing!

I'm not quite as big as you and ride 2 up with the wife..went in to get a fatboy when I realized what i would have to buy to ride 2 up on the FB I went with the heritage, Already hady the bags and backrest. the windshield was a throw-in( could live with oer with out it).

and with a few simple mods.. you could make it so that it strips down in a few minutes

It all depends what you like and can afford,I would get a street glide, better all around protection for year round riding, comfort, easy to mod, good for taking your wife with you for a weekender.
