Suggestions for trip - departing eastern PA
Most of these roads are open country roads along the blue ridge mountains. Youll go through some nice small towns and run into some really nice country folk.
One last thing. Im not a huge fan of riding the skyline drive or blue ridge pkwy for a long distance. Maybe I have just been on there way too many times. I do live 10 minutes from the north entrance to the drive. Thats why if it were me Id only take the pkwy for a shorter distance.
Try to avoid Route 15 in Maryland (Frederick) south towards Manassas, VA -it truely sucks - very boring, but you can make good time.
Skyline drive = 35 mph with motorhomes stopping in the middle of a curve to look at Bambi and you have to pay to get on it. Frustrating but beautiful vistas. Blue Ridge Parkway (no entrance fee, 45mph with limited access and areas you can pass) is my Ol Lady's new favorite road, but we havn't been down it during leaf season. Fill your tank before you get on it.
Remember leaf season is coming up and lodging can get scarce.
If you find yourself near Hundred, WV stop at the Miss Blue Restaurant at the intersection of Route 7 and 250, both of which are great roads (particularly 250 north out of Hundred). THE best honey-dipped fried chicken and desserts you would die for. I rode 120 miles just for the chicken. Eat dessert first and save any chicken that's leftover.
Don't fret about the Tail of The Dragon. It's just a road. Nice area swarming with cops! If you see a rider coming the other way patting the top of his helmet with his hand, it's a warning that cops are ahead. Cherahola Skyway (sp) is worth the trip, but there are reports of locals spilling oil at night to keep the motorcycles away. Go figure.
