Wrap it up in a shop towel, them lock a set of vice grips on it and unscrew.....

Easy enough?

I wrapped the old one in a rag ,..then used a pipe wrench.

I took mine right off the bike completely, wrapped up the rubber part nice and tight in a cloth, put the rubber part in a bench vise and turned the chrome arm. Came right off nice!!

I could not remove mine. I ended up cutting the rubber off...which was not easy...it was locked on. I ended up twisting the bolt off leaving the remaining inside the shift arm. ARGH!!!! Dremel to the rescue. At that point I had resigned myself to the fact that I may be buying a new shift arm anyway...but the pieces finally worked themselves out and the new one screwed in easily. BY FAR, the most difficult work I have done to my bike...and it should have been easy. Someone at the factory was having a lot of fun with the lock-tite that day.

Use Blue Loctite on this part.

I removed mine by grabbing the peg in a vise grip with a cloth around it. The threads were pretty seized but it came out with no discernable damage to the rubber peg. The newer Harley metal pegs are turned in with an allen wrench, so it went in with no effort
