Default starter removal info

I have a 2001 heritage softtail, & when we tried to start it, smoke came out from under the seat. Pulled that off, & wires are all burnt. Started pulling parts off from it to get to the starter. We do not have a book on this bike. Has anyone every replaced their starter? Any info at all on the removal, or trouble shooting starter problems?

In order to take the starter out, you have to remove the primary cover. Before you do that, pls check for loose connection, it could be a loose connection causes arcing and smoke the cables under the seat. Go from there ok?

The service manual will be your best friend. I pulled mine a month or so ago due to the starter clutch (insude the starter) going bad. You have to remove the oil tank, which makes it messy, but it is all relativley easy to do.

Def. double check that the battery connections are tight, the ground wire that mounts right on the top of the frame, as well as the connection on the starter.

Ok, got the starter out last nite, it was messy. Just have to remember how it all goes back once we get the starter from harley. Also I am assuming we need to change all the gaskets too. I have a list of things to get, new wires, etc.
