Default Console Acorn Nut...

Anybody have experience with dealing with a Acorn Nut that doesn't want to come off? I have a 2003 Train.

I tried removing my dash console today and the nut just turns and turns. I believe the bolt it's attached to is turning with the Acorn nut.

I messed with it for about 45 minutes today before I had to leave for work. I'm aonna attack it again in the morning. I was just wondering if anybody else has experienced this problem. Chances are though, I'm the first one this has ever happened too.

It looks like you loosened it up part way, if you hold tension on it with the dash, does it still spin?
with the dash tight to the tank, can you get a set of needle nose pliers on the threads?
If you only have a couple of threads showing above the dash, take an old putty knife and grind a V notch in it, press the putty knife against the bolt(to protect your dash you might want to cover the rest of the putty knife with tape) .

This happened to me also. Happens when the cosnole nut is tightened too tight and strips the bracket. The bracket has a square mounting hole and the bolt has a square that fits into it (like a carriage bolt). The bracket rounds out so when you try to lossen the nut everyting including the bolt turns. I finally had to take a Dremel Tool with a cut-off disc and cut the nut off. I used tape and rags to cover everything and went real slow. It was a tedious process. I cut it off close as I could to the console and then cut straight down so the remainder of the nut could be split. If it is loose enough you may can just cut the bolt. Not a fun thing to deal with. Good Luck!

Its sounds like the nut or piece that keeps it from spinning are striped. your gonna have to cut it off and replace the screw or try to pry the counsel as you are loosening the bolt.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

XRay, I tried your suggestion today. I was able to get the console up a bit but no where nearly enough to get some pliers in there. A notched putty knife might do it.

I certainly don't want to force the dash up any more than I have too. I'm sure something in there will give and then I'll be screwed.

I can see myself ending up doing what Harleyheaven did.

I'll tell ya, nothin's ever easy!

I'll let ya know how I make out.

I have the exact same problem. I think it needs to come off to rewire my bars internally, but I just keep putting it off. The only solution I can come up with is the dremmel idea. It seems like it will be tedius, but oh well. It will be a project for next summer when I get home.

Yeah, that's what I'm dealing with. I gotta replace my bars and their internally wired. That console has to come off.

I'm gonna do battle with it in the morning.

i had this problem to........what it is also is no washer under the accorn nut......i took mine of a while back and didnt put the washer on before the accorn nut which caused it to bottom out before going tight.....you will unfortunatly have to grind or dremel that bad boy of then strighten out the tank fixing plate with a pair of grips once the consoles off. lucky my dealer was in a generous mood cause they did the grinding and supplyed the new accorn nut and bolt free of charge. but if you cover the tank and stuff and go gentle you should be fine.

If the nut isn't tight, slide the putty knife between the nut and the washer, not under the dash

Pardon the (non)artwork, the V notch should be steeper (to wedge the bolt).

the nut is on a bracket welded to the tank. it is thin metal. mine was stuck too but did not spin. i used penetrating fluid and then a box wrench and a hammer to hit the wrench and it came loose
