I'm looking at Avon cobras for my Nightrain the MH-90 21 is a bias ply tire and the rear is radial. Now will they work well together and can you use a radial tire on the stock laced wheel? I would like to go with a 90-90 on the front and they offer the Venom in that size. would that work ok? Is anyone running that combo? Thanks
ah...Im no expert but I just did an extensive amount of research by reading http://www.rattlebars.com/valkfaq/tirewear/ , emailing avon and metzler with numerous emails with "stupid questions" and last but not least the trusty forums. I just ordered a Metzler 100/90-19 front and Avon Cobra 240/40VR-18 rear due to a softer composite on the Avon and a softer (than dunlop but not as soft as an Avon) tire on the rear. Both of these companies gave me the stock answer of 8-15K miles each....yeah okay. So I asked myself why is there such variances in tire wear? you can search them here forums and see that 4-10K seems to be the answer. people will say "riding style" WTF? unless you live in deals gap or some other extreme riding coniditons - I dont see how this would apply. Long story yes. Tire pressure and the MOM. MOM says for a rocker, 30 in da front and 38 in the rear. That tire pressure is to low, which may contribute to my front tire all bumpy (or cupping) - rear tire is worn right in the middle by only a 1/2". Suggest you research and talk to avon about psi and ignore the MOM (at least with tire pressure)....sorry for the long post, hopefully it helps, I spent at least 3 weeks researching around. In the end, it will probably be a trial and error thing.
The OEM tires are Bias on front and Radial on rear. I been running Radials on front and rear since the Dunflops wore out and ain't looked back. You'll have to run a Radial tube in the front tire.
Since my sig picture was taken, I've switched to Avon Cobra in the rear and Avon Venom-X in the front. They're tight and predictable in the twisties and in general, handle a bit better than stock. Too soon to tell about wear life yet.
i just tried the new dunlop roadsmart and love it as it gave me a little more rpm because it is lower profile
I saw them and not being too impressed with Dunlops (stock tires) they wore well almost 10,000 miles on them but not to the wear bars yet real close though they feel real loose now. I'm installing cams this winter so the rpm thing is not that important. I was thinking of the Metz but there has been some bad press about them here. I haven't pulled the trigger yet still looking right now since the riding season here is comming to a close.
