Default ready for a change

Thinking of moving up from a sportster 1200c, to either, a standard or deuce. I really enjoy riding on long trips on the highway. I still love my sporty, just do not feel comfortable on the highway at 80+ speeds. I mostly ride solo now, but would take passenger on trips. Any infor would help.

Don't be fooled by the mellow looks of a bagger, I have a deluxe and electra glide in the garage and I really enjoy the bagger even on short and winding roads

I went from a '98 1200 Sporty to an '06 Heritage Classic. Should have made the switch sooner. Take one for a test ride. Just my .02

deuce comes loaded great from the factory, if you buy a standard be prepared to start in on the aftermarket parts. I have a nightrain which is basically a standard with different bars, and since I put standard bars on it....I guess that's really what I have.

I love my scoot, I suppose like we all do....and I looked at the deuce but the night train was just more affordable for me. good luck with your choice!

This is just one riders opinion but if you like to take long trips and ride on the highway or ride 2 up a lot, a Deuce or a Softail Standard or Night Train is not the way to go.

Their wicked cool bikes but in my opinion their not made for long distance, comfort riding. There's no way I'd wanna do a 200 mile day of riding on my Night Train and then get up in the morning and do it again.

Twice I've rented a Road King out in the desert where I have put on 800 plus miles in a week and I felt hardly any fatigue. I can't speak for the other touring bikes, only for the Road King. As far as I know, it's the Cadillac of Harleys! Big windshield (detachable if you want), solid or leather locking bags and a big comfortable seat!

Don't get me wrong, I love my Softail but my next bike will be an RKC. If done correctly, it can look wicked cool cruising down the blvd. or you can pack the hell out of it and ride from NY to LA in comfort.

Don't make the mistake of going from a Sportster, to a Softail or a Dyna and then end up buying a touring bike because you finally decided that you want to be comfortable.

I'm sure a lot of members here will probably blast me for my opinion but you asked for it and I gave it to ya.

For what it's worth, it's just my .02

Good luck in your decision.

Chuck,

I don't think anyone would blast you for an honest assessment - you are exactly correct - I wouldn't want to do an 800 mile day on my Deuce but I can tell you I have logged 350 - 400 in a day and have been none the worse for wear, of course don't know how many of those I could do in a row if trying to cross the country. Once again, great editorial on the shortcomings of some bikes, Greg needs all angles to make a good decision.

Now with all that being said, I still say:

DEUCE MAN DEUCE

The MSRP price of the Deuce is quite a bit more than the Softail STD because of the extra chrome that's installed at the factory.
You're paying for it, and it's not coming as a gift.. So, if you don't like the lines of the Deuce, you're no further ahead by buying one.
There is no price advantage with any Harley.. If you buy the Standard or the Train and customize it to your tastes, and it all works out the same. So, get the style of bike you like the best.

Having said that, I agree with Spyder.
If you plan on some touring, the FX Softail isn't the bike. Take his advice and buy a RK, or something like that.
I bought my Train for one thing, and that's cruising the Blvd. It was also the only model that excited me.
If I want to go to an out of state rally, I'm gonna toss it in my trailer, and get there in air conditioned, climate controlled comfort.
But hey, that's just me...
