Just got a '95 Fatboy and I'm wondering about 2 things.
1) gascaps on both sides so fill up on he rightside only or fill up on both sides? I know there is a crossover line but seems kind of small to flow very quickly.
2) sometimes upon attempting to start i will get a nasty chain grinding sound. Am i not giving the starter enough time to slow back to a stop before attempting to restart? It never happens upon the first crank only after I have attempted once and re-attempted to start. Is this something I should be concerned with?
thanks doug for the reply. I have good connections on the starter. It's not a matter of not wanting to start rather it almost sounds as if the the engine is back-spinning against the starter giving a nasty chain slap sound.
Ok.... so let me see if i am understanding this. If the battery isnt 100 percent that upon attempting to start, the compression of the engine is enough to push back against the starter which in turn gives me the chain slap sound?
Maybe the primary chain needs to be tightened. Just a thought as chain slap can be a signal that the chain is too loose.
Another thing you might want to check is the bushing that receives the starter gear. They sometimes do not align and you'll get a loud noise with your starter engages. You will find the bushing pressed into your primary case.

Its not entirely uncommon. Just make sure you do stop for a second before pushing start button again. When you do push it again push it with conviction if that makes sense.
My 99 Softail will do that sometimes. I think what happens is it is hitting compression on one of the cylinders just as you let off of the starter button. Sometimes I think it even gets far enough to fire but as you have just released the button, it kicks back. The timing is retarded enough at start up that there is not enough inertia to carry it through. I don't think it really hurts anything, just sounds bad.
Welcome to EVO investigations. I have been through all kinds of stuff and got it squared. could be all kinds of things. Does it sound like it might be the starter selinoid not engaging by the starter or is the sound comming from the middle of the primary?
