Just recently purchased an 01 Heritage Classic with 20K.. Excellent condition, maintained per Harley schedule. People have been telling me that this engine is good for maybe 60K at best, then will need to be rebuilt. That doesn't seem right to me, but I am a new Harley owner and it did raise some concern.
Just like car tires-------------rotate them often, correct PSI and you can get more miles out of them than the manufacturer states. I think its all about the maintenace and like BluRooster states---how its used
By the time you get 60k on it, you will want more power anyway, I have 30k on my softail it uses no oil runs like a top with no issues. I'll be doing cam adjusters this winter but other than that I think 60k and beyond no problem.
I have 66,300 miles on my 98 FXSTC and it does not leak any fluids. I have done my share of up keep including new cam, pushrods, lifters and seals but that was because I wanted a little more power not because something broke. I normally ride pretty easy but atleast once per ride I will run it to redline thru 3 oe 4 gears.
I chatted with an older gentleman the other day that had put over 95K on his road king. Then just did a engine swap through Harley for a rebuilt engine and it runs like new. His bike was over 10 years old and looked beautiful. Must have been kept in the garage and cleaned often.
Harleys are like autos you can keep them as long as you like provided you take care of them and don't ride them like a crotch rocket.
I talked to a parts guy at Chandler Harley and he told me he had 127K miles on his 89 Heritage......original engine and internals....Periodic maintenance is must!! I am planning to get at least 100K out of my fatboy!!!
I had 80,000 on my '85 Roadking EVO and it was still running great when I sold it. If there was a need for rebuild it would only be a top end, valves, jugs, and maybe heads. The bottom end seldom needs attention.
Take care of it and change and check you fluids and you will be fine.
Mine is a 91 never been apart yet -- except fpr a cam and Stage 2 setup (carb +) that was done early though -- cases have got a litttle bit of a drip on a real hot day - so soon I will split the cases and fix the leak - but that's all -- Power is fine for me stock so far.. new tires and change the oil, plugs and keep it tuned...
