The Harley Davidson swing arm bag that I bought comes with a kind of tape that you put on first then strap the bag on and it prevents the paint from getting ruined.
only 3 year old dead thread.. by now everyone already knows that the leather straps eat through the powdercoating on the swingarms, which is why most people wrap the swingarm with tape (3M Super +33 tape for me).. or build a mount (which i also ended up doing). 1/8" thick stainless steel, full backplate on the outside, also inserts on the inside, mounted to the belt guard, top and lower..
My mechanic called me this morning and told me that after taking the swingarm bag off that he noticed it had rubbed the paint off of the swingarm. I went by this afternoon to survey the damage, UGH! In some places it rubbed clean down to the bare metal and in others it wore the clear coat off leaving it hazy and uneven.
My plan, once it's warmer, is to tape off and cover everything but the damaged area and repaint it. A coworker advised that I wet sand it with 2000 grit after each coat to feather the newly painted area with the old then clear coat it.
I'm open to suggestions.
Your "mechanic called you"? Over a swing arm bag with two straps? God forbid you ever need an oil change or a bulb replaced!
This thread cracks me up, I love it though!!!
I put my swing arm bag on fully knowing it would rub the paint off, but I also know i'm pretty much gonna leave it on there 90% of the time and when of if I do take it off i'd just repaint it....
I bought my bike to ride it! It should look like you ride it then, you can only prevent so much....
Deal with it and leave the bag on there and use it....
