Taking the rocker apart this winter , I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to clean the chrome without leaving swirls marks? And how to remove tar without damaging the chrome? Also any tips on preventing corrosion on nuts and bolts?
Just use soft cloth towels, Walmart has them in the auto section for $5.00 a bundle. While your there get some turtle wax chrome polish or any major name brand. The swirl marks are usually from picking up foreign matter material (sand or dirt off bike) into the cloth and then rubbing the chrome. Its not from the polish.
Cheaper chrome will swirl no matter what, I have a few Kuryakyn pieces that look horrible in floresent light or under street lights, however in sunshine they look great. As Rakthi said "WD40", on tar or non pumice gojo, or gasoline will also work.

I use chrome polish now and then but most of the time I just use a glass cleaner like Windex.

Chrome will not shine anymore than it will when it's just good and clean. Polish can help protect it between cleanings kind of like wax on a car. Think about it...you can't tell the difference between a freshly chromed piece or a piece that is just clean. Unless it's been abused, of course. I've got alot of chrome on my bike and I wash it about once a week during prime riding season and use windex wipes or spray windex with micro fiber towels in between washings or for a quick clean up. I have used some polish and the only thing it does it bead up and add a little protection but does nothing for the shine. At least nothing I can see with my eyes.
