I love mine, bought an 09 towards the end of last summer. I'm 5'9" 245 and it's perfect for me, easy to handle and rides great, but as others have said test ride a few and get what feels good for you.
Getting to old to take it on road trips (both me and it). It's over 20 yrs old and 100,000km so it's starting to get a little cranky itself. I'm going to keep it but I'm also getting a new ultra ltd. The new FXSTC's probably have a lot less vibration with the balanced motors and 6-speeds.
I have ta 07 FXSTC and love it. I kept it when I go my Ultra. I told my wife, "I didn't get rid of thefrst kid when we had our second, why would I get rid of my first bike when I got a second?" So far it is working.
Two different bikes, two different rides. I like the softail for around town stuff and the Ultra for open highway. The FXSTC has the stage 1 and V&H True duals. It is a lot quicker than the Ultra. The ltr ismore stabe at high speed. The Softail, loud and obnoxious. Low seat, higher handlebars.
the only thing bad about the Softail Customs is the 21 inch wheel and thin front tire. They tend to pull you all over the road when you hit groves in the road. I think the large front tire like on a fatboy may give a nicer ride but its still a great riding bike... Most harleys all have test ride day on weekends for free go try a softail. My dealer let me go for a 6 mile ride and that gave me a good feel for the bike.
I love my 08 FXSTC 105th. The ultra is buy far a better ride, but it is all abougt what you like, i plan on getting a ultra one day, for a bike to go on long rides.
I have an 07 Custom with 30k on it and I would not trade it for any other bike made. The only thing that I do not like about it is that it is not paid for. Best of luck on your search
