I took a Softail Standard in 03 and sorta made it a Custom. Sure was a fun scooter I must say.

I guess I have no saying here, as I ride a standart. But FWIW, I believe HD sets up the 21" wheelers for people around 6', as mine fits me like a glove without needing extented controls or anything. I dropped her 1.5" in the back, but that's just because I didn't like the gap between the tire and the fender. Other then that, I just relocated the front turn signals (20 min. ago) to the forks as I find them very anoying on the baby apes. Big sucker, rejet, and good to go.
Shitloads of nice parts out there tho.

I'm on my 2nd EVO STC, so I'm a little biased. I think they handle better than the others on back country roads, twisties and around town. If I were doing alot of slab riding I'd have a Heritage-on up. Just depends on what you want to do with your ride..

I love my 99 Softail Custom. EVO engine and all. Most fun bike I have ever owned.

I have a 2007 softail custom that has 32k miles on it now. I'm 5'10. I added 16" Apes, 3" forwards and a Mustang solo seat with a drivers back rest. I've ridden this setup from Austin, Tx to Missouri. Very comfortable trip. This setup works for me.

Love my 07 and have had almost as much fun 'modding' it as I have riding it.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with one, but you do need to remember that its not a Dyna.
Its longer, heavier, and lower (pegs hit sooner) to the ground so you can't toss it into turns as hard as you can your old Super Glide.
Because your sitting 'in' it more than on it, it takes a bit of muscle to really horse it into a truly tight turn.
But having said that I find its more than nimble enough to do anything I have asked it to.
Just one tip, don't try to roll on the throttle really hard if you have it leaned way over.
That big fat 200mm rear tire may look really nice, but is not sticky enough to handle all the low end torque the engine is capable of putting out unless its on a really good road surface.
Otherwise it likes to try to skip sideways over tar strips and uneven road surfaces. It can be a little disconcerting the first time it happens to you.
But if you pay attention to the road surface your on its no big deal.

Good Luck looking.
