Default Need exhaust help

Just trying to see what is out there for my Night Train. I'd like high end, middle of the road, and bare bones advice on a Stage 1.

I can't seem to find a lot of info on what to put together to make a complete Stage 1 meaning, I don't know what to mix and match to get the best bang for my buck.

Can anyone break it completely down for me? I had a Nightster (07) with Vand H Staggered Short Shots, Fuel Pak, and High Flow Air Intake kit. JMHO, but this seemed like bottom of the barrel and I was not happy with the constant backfire I got. My advice by the local mech was to get the PCIII. He wanted 600 to do the job and to pay for the part. That was back in 08.

My problem is that I don't know which of the three aforementioned Stage 1 parts (exhaust, ECU, and air kit) go together and go together with working properly as well. I don't want to have to keep buying things to fix it later on (like the Nightster I had).

Since my Night Train is denim black I want to add even more to it. That puts me with choosing between the Thunderheader, V&H, and maybe Hooker Troublemakers for pipes, but what of the other two aformentioned parts goes with those pipes and works well?

Thanks for any advice.

One of the sponsors of the forum is a company called "Fuel Moto" . Look them up , call them and ask for Terry . From everything I have heard , he is the man when it comes to this stuff . Personally , I just bought a Thunderheader , and a Thundermax auto tune device . I have not installed them yet , because I live in the frigid snow covered north east . So I can't give a testimony of how they work yet . But ... from everything I hear/read , it should work great . Oh , I have a S.E . stage I . I will probably buy the K&N filter for it though , because I want to run it as an open element and I'll need an oiled filter for the times I get caught in rain . Good luck .

Best performance exhaust is a 2n1. Thunderheader, Fatcat, Rinehart...

Any high flow ac - KN, SE...

The more difficult decision is fuel management and how much you want to spend. Dealer download, DFO/Fuel Pak, PC, TTS, Thundermax PC Auto Tune...

V&H or any other quality pipes and a thundermax for ecm as you dont have to pay someone to tune the bike.

exhaust is a personal preference.

I have talked to guys who in their opinion think that once hd got away from the evo engine than the thunderheader is NOT necessarily the best exhaust.

many companies offer black exhaust. If they dont, you can send the exhaust out on your own to get it coated.

Enjoy your nitetrain and let the modifications/customization begin

A shorter pipe will quite often having more popping issues as the exhaust does not scavenge as well. A 2 into one will yield best power. there are plenty of options. Check out Bassani or Rinehart. They should both make black pipes. Vance and Hines is a good middle of the road exhaust. Your popping is definitely caused by the shortness of the pipes. give us a shout if you need pricing info, we carry almost all brands.

I did my stage 1 on my night train last August. Got V&H Big Radius exhaust in flat black, fuelmoto air cleaner (K&N I think), and also a pcIII.

If you look on Ebay you can find exhausts for pretty cheap, that's where I got mine. I called fuelmoto for the air cleaner and the pcIII. The people there are awesome and during the install you can call them with any questions. When you order the pcIII you can tell them what exhaust and intake you will be using and they will download the software into the pcIII for that specific setup free of charge.

If you have any basic mechanical skills and can follow written directions, I would highly suggest saving money and doing the installs yourself. VERY easy, but takes a little time.

Any questions let me know.

I'll second this. They will send you all you need with a Power commander loaded with a map all ready to go. On top of that, if you make any upgrades down the road, you can contact them and they will send you a new map to match what you did.
