Default Apes on FB and Heritage - Measurement Please

Installing apes and trying to decide the size. Anyone who has 12.5's, 14's or 16's could you please measure yours the way I did in the pic. I put a broom across the grips, not the clamps, and measured from the tank between the fuel gauge and console to the bottom of the broom. It would be best if this were done on a FB or Heritage. The Heritage bars measure 12"s this way. These bars are different than most as the handles pull back and go up making it more difficult to compare bars.

My 12.5s measure like 11", but they are pulled back further than I would like. I just haven't adjusted them b/ce they are coming off next month. My stock bushings are a bit mushy too. They are getting swapped out as well.

I wouldn't go lower than 14" if it were me. My 12.5s are way comfortable, but I have wanted taller since installing them.

I'm not sure how this helps you, but here you go. Mine measure 19" tank to bottom of broom stick.

Same here - installed 13" apes (w/1.5" risers) and wished I'd went with 16", especially those Carlini's.

Another person emailed me. He has 12.5's and measured a little more than Warg. Its very deceiving with these bars. The 12's look a lot taller than the Heritage bars. Looks like 14"s or better.

Hockey, are those 18" flyin apes?

I purchased the bars from Carlini as 16". Takeing a tape measure to them, measureing from very bottom of riser bar to very top at the hand grip bend, they measure as an 18" bar.

Carlini states their bars run tall and I could have returned them. I ended up likeing the the height so kept them.

I had orderd cables for 16" bars and needed to switch them out. Luckily didn't cost me anything.

Maybe Carlini measures the length of the verticle tupe only. IE, from the top of the riser bar to the bottom of the hand grip bend. So add 1.25" x2 and you get about 18.5".

So, to answer your question, they ARE 16" Carlini Fly'n apes.
(but they'd be 18" or 19" wild1's)

Ok guys, I kinda get the "ape" thing, they look cool and all....but from a riders standpoint when your hands are above your shoulder, isn't uncomfortable? It seems at slow speeds you have difficult time steering and maneuvering the bike. Not bashing, just asking.

I don't find it difficult to maneuver at slow speeds. All about balance I guess.
I do find it hard to maneuver or make tight U turns with wide beach style bars. They come in too close to my gut.

And for hands above my shoulders. Might have to do with good or not good blood flow? If you have good blood flow, it will pump up to your hands and will not cause ischemia. Similar to how blood is pump'd up to your head.

My arms do get tired when reaching up and working with tools, or even just holding my arms up. But with the bars, my hands are holding onto something and arms are hanging.
Bet I could hang from monkey bars in a playground longer than I can hold my hand up to ask to go to the baf'room.

Im buying apes for function. I started with stock Fatboy bars and was getting neck and shoulder pains and needed something taller. Went with Heritage bars cause its a cheap way to try taller bars - allows you to reuse the cable and bars are $50. Still get some Discomfort on longer rides and know taller bars would take care of that. Everything I read and people have told me, as long as you do not go above shoulders its all good.

Do a search. Lots of info out there and on several sites saying the same thing. I started this thread to figure out what height of bar. 12's are out for sure. 14's at a minimum, very possibly 16's.
