I used to carry tools when I rode AMF era harleys. Today, I subscribe to a AAA roadside assistance plan. The only tools I carry are a cell phone and a Visa card.
I have the AAA as well... but if it's something that will only take a couple of minutes to fix vs. an hour to wait for Trip A then I think the tools are worth it.
I don't like to pay someone to do a job that I can do if I can help it. So, I carry enough tools to do most roadside and basic repairs. On more than one occasion my tools have saved someone else's bacon while out on the road. At one point or another I've used every one of these things, though not necessarily on my bike.
I carry: Torx & Allen wrenches, 3/8 x 7/16 & 1/2 x 9/16 open ended wrenches, same sizes in sockets, spark plug socket, 3/8 ratchet, vice grips, crescent wrench, small needle nose pliers, Philips & Common screw drivers, fuses, wiring splices, electrical tape, zip ties, sharpie marker, & a cigarette lighter.
+1 on cash, because some places still won't take plastic. I carry most of what has been mentioned above. I would also add some AlumaWeld or other epoxy putty for metal, and a can of instant tire patch/repair.
