What I don't understand is that states that don't have helmet laws still give you a ticket for driving a car without your seatbelt on. I mean, I can ride around on a bike in shorts and sneakers, no helmet, and that's OK, but if I don't click it, I get a ticket. Talk about hypocrisy .

One thing about helmets I have noticed in my experience.
I used to wear full face and hated the feel of being detached from the whole riding open outdoors feeling. Probably why I didn't wear one much at all before the accident I mentioned above. But I've since started wearing a half helmet from HD and really enjoy it more. I get the feeling I want with the safety aspect. Plus, I have noticed the times I don't wear it, like on short rides with buddies around town, I can hear FAR less. The helmet actually blocks the wind from my ears and I can hear much better with the half helmet on. I still can hear my pipes, cars around, my buddies bikes etc but without the wind noise in my ears.
In the 60s and 70s, long before helmets became mandatory in California, my dad used to tell my brother and I not to wear helmets, because we wouldn't be able to hear a car coming up on us. It's funny because we always wore helmets when we rode our dirt bikes, but never wore them when riding street bikes. Now, I'm 57 years old and I always wear a full face helmet when I ride.
Yea i remeber when Cali didn't have a lid law...They changed over in 1993 or so. great times in the early 90's though.
If I am traveling, I definately like to wear one. With the sun, weather and other added unknowns, I prefer to wear it. When I am near home and its hot out I don't normally wear one as long as I am not going to be out all day in the sun.
I remember the same argument over mandatory eye protection 'many' years ago. Now it's cool to wear shades. Like Brando's response to "what are you rebelling against?" "What ya got?" Government will stop trying to save us when we stop letting them.
