Need help....i dont want or have any fixed bags. what have some of you done to take a long trip on your softtail. Thinking handle bar roll with something on the passenger pillion should allow for a change of cloths and weather gear. Do i have to add a sissy bar in order to get one of those stack bag set ups....??? and can i rest the bulk of it on the seat rather than fender.....none of this stuff will be permanent so wanted the cheapest and quickest route without killing paint or myself w sh#t flying off.
please help a brother out....whats your temporary set up?
I think you need the bags in order to carry everything you need which means I think you are going to have to install a backrest to hold everything on.
I have a detachable bar and luggage rack and the bike looks fine when removed. Got it all eBay for 130 bucks. Not sure if you will be that lucky or not. Sure wouldn't want to play full Harley price for the set up. Over $400.
Depends on how much you want. A roll bag is good for a few pairs of jeans and a good shirt. If you wanna take a few more things like rain gear and stuff/tools I would attach the sissy bar and put everything on the seat resting up against it. I packed for a week to myrtle with this type of bag on my sissy bar.
You do not need to drop that kind of coin for bags if you can get a sissy bar for cheap that comes right off. I keep the lines of my bike clean. Ebay for a sissy bar Chief!!
I have the Heartland kit but I did the exact same thing with my bobtail. When I had my Bobtail on there before I put my kit on, I had a HD sissy bar. You will need the mounting hardware as well. Its not as easy as just buyin the sissy bar. You have to buy the docking hardware and put them on as well which means relocatin the turn sigs slightly back.
Do you have a two up seat? If so you can get a back rest that goes in without docking hardware. I think a site sponsor on here sells them. HAULIN *** is the sponsor.

Chop,
You don't say if you have a destination in mind, where you are staying for a few days or not. If you are going to stay somewhere ship what you need via UPS or Fedex. Then just pack what you need until you get to your destination. You get ready to leave, ship your dirty clothes back home. It was just a thought. Enjoy your trip.
Thats what i was thinking....thought I saw where you could secure that stuff to the rear pillion....at least do without the fender rack.
I got a Saddleman BR1800 and it fastens with or w/o a sissy bar. I plan to make a run to Key West later this month and it should do me fine. You don't need to pack too much for 5 days. pair jeans, socks, undies, walking shoes, and oh, RAIN gear.
I gotta say I never thought of mailing stuff to myself....but would rather be self contained. Certain things I just want with me...few tools and cloths for elements.
That saddleman bag looks like it. Just cranks to the pillion....nice to have the option to use it with the bar aswell. .....Liken the that LOW too.
