Black out! ?
Nope. But sometimes it looks good enough for me. You can sand chrome off but it can be a bitch if it's a quality chrome finish. I highly recommend blasting it off because you wont get a proper bond otherwise. I do rattle can some of my own stuff. I have a painter buddy who does some stuff for me in his shop if I want a better job. Bottom line is powder is better and tougher. But if you're on a budget like me, sometimes the can is "good enough". I've never owned a show bike and probably never will. If I had more money, I might think differently, but I don't.
Key point of a rattle can is do lots of thin coats. Don't try to get it all in just a couple or it's gonna look a lot chittier then it has to.

I hear ya bro, i am far from rich, and every time i buy s thing or pay to have it done i get pisssed and think about how i shoulda learned to do it myself.. alot of good feed back in here thx guys.. I would definately like more feed back from other people that have done it themselves,, fyi it takes me a while to reply some times because im in iraq at the moment.
i dont have that problem with my old lady, she likes to help me out with the projects, and does all the cleaning up after me tooooo
I 've painted all the stuff that's on my Night Train including wheels and my ape hangers. I don't have a "local" powder coater. And I've had no problems at all with my wheels chipping, and I live down a mile long dirt/gravel road. The key is to make sure you prep the surface good. I sanded the parts good. On chrome parts, sand untill it's dull looking. Then spray some self etching primer on. Then paint. My painted parts have held up as good as the powder coated parts on another bike I have. And it would be an easy job to touch up the painted parts, If they were to chip.

+1 on taking everything in at once. The local place up here has a $250.00 minimum so I threw my SG up on my lift and stripped off everything I wanted to get done last winter. Of course I was in a hurry since I was leaving for a week of school in Phoenix that evening. Forget a few parts so now I'm waiting until I get enough stuff to make it worth the minimum or until a friend gets his stuff done.
Here's a pic. You can see the front wheel and fork lowers and apes. Can't tell much about the rear wheel.. Sorry I don't have any better pics right now.

I powdercoated everything I needed wheels, handlebars, triple trees, sliders etc. But I used high temp BBQ paint on my mufflers and heat sheilds, And I am very impressed how it is holding up. They have been painted for a year now, and no need for a touch up yet.
i'm not a painter, but after my local powder coater did a terrible job on a box of parts i learned how. if u ask it up here there are lots of experts that will help ya thru. from what i have found my paint holds up really well. i ain't picky tho and my bike isn't on a showroom floor. i sand all my stuff and use spray paint. if it doesn't come out good i repeat... thanks for ur sacrifice and service!
