Went to the Dealer yesterday and he said don't worry about changing the oil till 5000 mile checkup. As long as the bike wasn't stored in a place where the temp would change frequently to create moisture inside the engine . One of the few honest dealers left !!!

So, at what mileage (on a new bike) should one change from dino to synthetic?

No harm changing the oil. In the future, change it before winter storage. You want clean oil to sit in the crankcase and not oil laden with acidic combustion byproducts. The oil will still be perfectly good come springtime.

The dealer told me that there was no need to switch from dino to synthetic. He said he's been using dino oil for 30+ years and hasn't had a problem yet. Also said that it was purely a riders choice as to what oil he or she would use (dino vs. syn).

I change once a year, or 4k miles using full syn... but that is me..

BTW, my mechanic has a 2000 Deuce with 135,000 miles... and has never been into the engine... what oil does he run you may ask? Mobil V-twin full Syn... so guess what I just changed mine over to?

I'm sure that using Rotella, Catrol, or what ever, as long as it is changed regularlly is good. That being said, I know that full syn handle heat better.. being I'm in SC, and have an air cooled bike, I want full Syn.. that is just me...

I would have changed it to syn (Mobil v-twin) before putting it in storage. That's what I do, even if it only has a 1000 mi on it or so. I'd change it out soon, regardless. Start the season with fresh oil before temps climb. JM2C.

I just put Harley's Forula+ in all 3 holes at this service, Shifts quieter, hasn't been warm enough to see how it holds up to heat yet.

I switched to Mobil 1 V twin a few weeks ago. So far so good. No leeks, and just a little head noise, wich is pretty much normal. Didn't switch in the primary, just changed the oil and put some fresh ATF in. Haven't done the trans yet (That screw between the shocks is a bitch on lowered softails when you don't have a jack.). But I thin k when it's due, I'll give it some redline heavy duty tans fluid.

IMHO, this isn't the best train of thought to go by. While it may be working for him, imagine if everything went by this. We wouldn't have floride in our toothpaste/drinking water, unleaded gas, unleaded paint, asbestos free items, etc. This list can go on and on.

What I tell everyone that I work with is if your reason for doing something is, "because it's always been done that way," maybe you need to rethink what you're doing.
