Default RE: tranny problem

just had the exact same thing your describing happen to me on my 93 heritage july 4th weekend. I brought it to the dealer and they tore it apart, the service manager explained that in 91-92 they had some bad gears on the primary and I must have got a left over on my 93, it's a common problem. I'm by no means a wrench and don't have a very good memory so I think this was his explanation of my bill, this gear spun on the primary shaft which broke the chain, which put it into some other part (can't recall) which in turn took 5th gear out of my tranny. He said they typically start leaking before it goes but mine didn't leak a drop. They also replaced the clutch spring cuz he says they are known to snap with out warning, extra $5.50 while they had it apart. My bike had 16,000 original miles on it and I don't abuse it, never did a burnout with it and I'm pretty sure the oringinal owner, my 63 year old boss who I bought it from with 8,800 miles on it summer b/4 last didn't either.
So for them to fix it, plus do a 5,000 mile service my bill was $668.70 and 2.5 weeks with no bike. Hope this helps and if some of my description of the fix makes no sense, sorry, like I said I'm no wrench and have destroyed a few brain cells since the 4th.
