Of course the service manual shows a fancy tool for installation, but the method in the video looks easy enough. Be sure to stuff plenty of rags around the rods because if that ring gets away from you, you know damn well it will end up down the crank case. Good luck man and keep us updated.
yeah.. the tool in the book is the same one they use in the video..i'm hoping my neighbor has one.. he said he's either got the piston ring gapping tool, or the piston wrist pin removal tool..one of them, i hope it's the removal tool...otherwise i've got ice picks and pointing things and jagged things and all sorts of things to get them bastards out of there.

yeah, my neighbor has a huge garage..torches and mills and lathes and grinders.. he built a 1961(or71, i forget but i think 61) Ford Econoline monster truck (950hp/1100tq), he built his own Big Bear Chopper (124ci, dual carbs, monster).. and has tools out the ***..i have my own tools, but he's got all the weird **** you wouldn't normally think of ..it's quite nice.

I am getting so many damn airline miles from this build its ridiculous.. my credit card company was like "Oh, we see you've just spent a boat load of money on something.. here..have double the rewards points for that, and we're just going to throw in 15,000 extra for free".. well.. neato.. so now i'm going to get 2000 more because i just put in the order to have the heads done :-D

is it March yet?

double edit:

i also wanted to mention that i'm planning on getting rid of my 1.5" tank lift.. i figure with the bigger motor, i'll probably need every drop of gas i can get. so if anyone wants it, let me know.. it's just a few mount-extensions, a longer tank bolt, and a longer fuel cross-over line.

And all i've learned is that this particular mod is easier than fabricating that damn swingarm bag mount was.. if you can turn a wrench, you can tear a twin-cam apart. The hardest part thus far, as I had anticipated, was removing the wrist pins from the pistons to be able to remove them, and that took a total of about 4 1/2 minutes.
New cams are in, new lifters are in, old jugs and heads are boxed up ready to ship out for core exchange/porting&polishing.. got to wash the new jugs out (as suggested), clean them up real nice.. install the piston rings and pistons, install the new jugs..then i'm on hold until I get the heads back from FuelMoto

Those pics are great. Wow. Looks like fun. Question. The shot of the two pistons side by side. Is it normal the top of the old one is that dirty ? Looks like a lot of buildup
