Unless Vance and Hines stopped making them they had two different kind of long's... they had the Longshots which I am not 100% sure came with a skin... then they had the Big shot longs which did come with a skin. Might be a difference in what you were looking at and maybe not.
Between the two I have had the Big shot longs and mine never discolored and they were great pipes.
The difference in these pipes is the diameter of them and the big shot longs also have a power chamber where the long shots do not. Of course the big shot longs cost a bit more, but they sound better and look nicer as well.
I have V&H BSL's and have absolutely no problems with them. A bit loud for some folks but nothing BCT QQ2 Baffels didn't take care of.
I also have a SE A/C and use TTS Mastertune. Without the TTS it would definately be running way lean. As others have mentioned on this thread . . . if the owner didn't run some sort of fuel correction system or software I'm certain that would explain the high temps and the bluing that you mention.
