Engine Lifespan
2000 FXST bought new.......139K on it right now......Cam shoes every 30-40K (had one shoe disintegrate a mile from home - no damage luckily- and actually had the new shoes in my saddle bag because I was going to chnage them the next weekend)have adj pushrods. Put a new stator in around 100K or so. Other than changes I have made (wheels, bars, etc....) everything else has been routine Maint. Rode it 2 weekends ago 1400 miles round trip to FLA and the only issue was burning entirely too much fuel (havent had time yet to figure it out).
Here's the issues I've experienced putting 90K miles on a less than 6 year old bike:
- Stator went out twice, one was under warranty
- Replaced battery after about 4 years
- Just replaced IAC and speed sensor for 2nd time each
- Starter clutch replaced
- chipped 3 teeth out of belt (my fault) and it lasted 2 years, then replaced after it snapped shifting into first from a stop!!
- Dunlop HD tires always... they're a good all round tire
- I replace front wheel bearings every other new wheel (that's 40-50K miles)
- Same with rear wheel, every 4th tire (40-50K miles)
- Syn 3 oil, HD gear and tranny oil per the manual every 5K, 10K & 20K
I'm a decent shade tree mechanic, bought a manual first thing, and I treat her nice. Always do my own maintenance. I do a lot of weekend trips, and have a 52 mile roundtrip commute to work when it's not raining/snowing or below 32 deg F.
TC88 to TC95 using SE Big Bore Kit w/ 203 cams & Python (V&H) exhaust installed at zero miles by the dealer before delivery.
Needed a complete engine rebuild less than 20k & 1.5 years later. Warranty denied due to the use of aftermarket parts used.
No Morris-Magnuson Warrany Act outside the USA.

Why do you replace the wheel every 40-50k miles? my 1st time hearing of this....
I'm 20k miles into my '15 RGS and wanted to know if in 25k more miles i should look into a new wheel? why? Thanks ..
When did HD go to the C lifters? There have been some problems with those. But probably not nearly as many as some people claim. I do plan to replace them as a routine maintenance item just for peace of min.
I do hope you were being sarcastic about the wheel, if not I do hope you realized that he meant tires being changed.
I played around with a few different kinds of oils, but came back to Harley synthetic oil & tranny fluid. I used redline in the tranny for a while but kept clinging to the sensor, which had to be replaced twice.
Maintenance: I do it all on schedule per the book. Been through 2 stators, 2 tranny speed sensors, 2 IAC sensors, 1 starter clutch, 2 batteries, 4? sets of spark plugs, 1 drive belt, tranny main bearing failed at 102K so rebuilt it, lots of tires and lots and lots of oil changes.
I don't tear my bike up, but I do ride the he!! out of her. Regularly go 80-100 on the 1/2 hour ride to work. Weekend trips, lots of rain (I think she attracts it) and about 20 states.
I started this thread and I am happy it is still providing information. My 05 Heritage has 105K on her and still no engine problems. I did install the cam tensioner upgrade at 33K, but other than that, nothing. SYN3 oil until 10K and then Amsoil all the way. She is semi-retired, as my wife bought me a 15 CVO Ultra Limited for my 65 birthday last July. I have 13K on this one. Safe Riding All.
