has anyone ever stripped the drain plug? can you tap it out to the next size bigger? or what would be a good way to fix it without replacing it?

How bad is it stripped? There is a number of thread repair kits out there that may get you out of your problem.
Go to your local auto parts store and ask questions. I did a quick Google search and came up with a bunch of easy to use kits.

Helicoil. Used to use them allot on shovelheads for the exhaust bolts and they work well for spark plug holes as well.
