Default Outer Primary Cover

My drain plug threads and one of the threads for the derby cover screw are stripped out..........so I either need a new outer cover, or can I retap those threads and get a bigger drain plug and screw?

This is on my 2005 FLHTCUI..........anyone have experience dealing with this issue?
Any ideas?

I found an outer cover on Ebay, but if I can do something with mine that would be great.

Thanks,

Steve

Hate to say it but the drain plug is on the inner primary not the outer, I'm sure you can retap the drain plug. I'm sure others will chime in.

On the drain plug, just go with the next bigger size and tap it out. You can even go metric to just go a little over. I don't get the derby cover. If your talking about the primary cover just use a heli-coil.

Drain plug is in the outer primary on the 2005...........horizontal right under the derby cover.

So I guess my next question would be, where would I get the next size up drain plug?
And what size would that be?

It's a magnetic plug isn't it? If so, call these guys and see if they can help you.

I may just helicoil both of them..........I'll get stuff ready and when I do my next fluid change I'll do it then while the primary is drained.

My 2004 has a tapered pipe plug in it. Book says it's an MS, not sure when it got changed. However, I think you'r is a MS plug. It does not seal on the face. It seals in the bevel. You cannot repair that with a helicoil. The insert esge will not seal with an o-ring. However, if you have enough face, it could seal with a flat gasket. Problem is, then it's hard to keep things from loosen on a shaky Harley. That is why Harley uses MS plugs They torque on the face tight and seal in the bevel. You also have one stripped on the Derby. I would replace it. I would not use a torque wrench for seals. Run them up and just bump them. They will not get loose. If you use a torque wrench, the steel threads and oil in the aluminum is really way over torqued. The first is how the MS system works. The is a repair that caused all kind of problem. First, helicol and then a thread insert. Even the insert was a lot of since then it required a face for a washer gasket and there was problems and it wanted to leak till the face was flatten with a file square to insert.
