Default Deuce headlight bucket swap

My Tradewinds bucket (5 3/4" Concours) arrived yesterday, along with the Headwinds mount listed for FXSTD application.

Upon examining the mount (which is sort'a "L" shaped to allow for some extension out from the triple tree) I couldn't help but notice that the 3/8" hole that would be used to attach the mount to the top of the bottom triple tree was not drilled in the bottom of the mount, but was drilled in the side of the mount instead! There's no way this thing mounts as I would expect it to to the top of the lower triple tree where the stock headlight mount attaches.

Is this a mistake from the manufactureer of the mount, or am I just not seeing the obvious? The pittiful instructions included seem to indicate that the attachment hole is in the bottom of the mount, not in the side like mine is.

Any help or advise appreciated.

Jez,

That mount must be the wrong one - you should have an L (or weak J) shaped bracket with a hole in the side the short leg bends twoards - the bracket definitely mounts from the bottom and bends down towards the tire. If I am not clear let me know and I will go snap a pic and post it.

Well...maybe I 've been looking at this thing all wrong! If the leg that the light bucket mounts to turns down towards the tire, then maybe this IS the correct mounting block. (1-0012CA, Mount, Rocket, FXSTD, CHR PL) Its Headwinds # 626-359-8044.

So, you're saying that the leg having the mounting hole drilled in the side attaches to the triple tree and the leg containing the drilled (and tapped) hole all the way through hangs off the front of the triple tree, turned down towards the tire. I just didn't consider this because I assumed that the bucket wouldn't have enough clearence. I guess I had a preconception as to how the mount was supposed to go.

I'm going out and check this out! Thanks VooDoo.

Repeat after me...Les, you're a dummy, Les, you're a dummy...

Yes, the mount does work! I'm sooo excited!

That is the danger of sticking to preconceived notions. I had it in my head that the mount attached a different way.

Thanks, VooDoo. Information swapping like this (and the people who hang around here) is what makes this such a great resource.

Now, I'm going out and install that new bucket!
