o.k right now i have a 2006 road king custom with 4,500 miles and rinehart true duals. its pretty sweet and i love the ride. however i really want a black pearl deluxe and a dealer a few hours has given me the best deal yet. hes offered to trade me an 05 deluxe(black pearl), stock pipes ,added backrest. it has 8000 miles on it by an old man in town who bought it from them. the bike is in mint condition, they offered a straight trade, and said the rear tire is getting bad and they would replace the tires for free before i get it. i know i am loosing on the pipes, and a few more miles but, he said he will put on solid black tires instead of the whitewalls, and my goal right off the back is too get black spoke wheels. i know i will get greef from some of my fellow touring members if i decide to do this, but what do you softail guys think? how is the ride? any ups or downs too this situation? is the bike plenty comfortable on long trips?. i mean the softail is an awesome looking bike and i have a goal and a image in my head of how i want it too look, so i think im going to go thru with this. oh yea one more thing. a dealer in my town has the same softail deluxe year and color exactly with added saddle bags and they want $3,000 more than this other dealer. it is a dealer demo bike and it has 3,400 miles on it. this is another option, but if i want that one i will have to sell my bike outright first, if i want to spend 3,000 more i will wait to sell mine and just get an 07.
Tough call. The dealer never losses but if it's worth it to you, go for it. If you do lots of long rides, you may miss the RK. What's nice about the softail is you can do a lotta customizing to create the bike you want. Good luck.
I have ridden mine as much as 550miles in a day, and 1000 over a couple.
That said, I'm beat at the end of a full day (11-12 hours).
I'm sure that the RK rides smoother over bumps, and if you are swallowing miles by the 1000's, then you might consider that. The Deluxe is lowered as well, so it does ride just a little harder over big bumps than other Softails.
I love my bike, and it's near perfect for what I want (except that I'm drooling over a RoadGlide). I had to do some mods to make it better for me for the long haul. Cut the seat back, highway pegs, windshield.
Anyhow, if you want it, you want it. Count on $600-$900 for quality saddle bags, $1000 for lower pipes/ac/tune so that you can run the bigger bags that make longer trips easier.
Windshield is about $350, Crash bar for hiway pegs ~$300, Pegs and mounts ~100
Just a few things to consider. Not trying to steer you away by any means.
the bike does have a windshield, and i have a power commander for a softail from a friend, so that being said. the rk custom is lowered stock as well, and it does take bumps hardard than a standard. i hate the seat on my custom and definatly planned on replacing. so i gotta decide which bike to get a seat for
I have an 05. just rode 550 over 2 days. my a** is ok but at times i wish i had a bigger bike. when i bought the deluxe i had 2 choices. the deluxe or a low rider from the dyna family. i chose the deluxe. i have a windshield, saddle bags, adjustable rear pegs for the wife, and just added highway pegs tonight. i do not want to be in your shoes and make this call. the only thing i can add is think and read some of the other challenges that the other deluxe owners have. seat, size of stuff, floor boards, etc. trust your own judgement and don't 2nd guess yorself. good luck. ride safe, ride often.
