hi guys new member and first time post. ive been riding motorcycles for a couple years now and currently have a 98 low rider. Just a few weeks ago i found a good deal on an 02 softail frame. It came with orange hd fatboy tank and fenders, fatboy solid disc wheels and tires, a smoothie front end(which i have a whole seperate bunch of questions on that piece haha) and a front and passenger seat. i bought it as a motivational kick in the *** to really learn how motorcycles work from the ground up. I have a basic knowledge of all the parts and how they work and interact but have never pulled one apart and really studied it. My original plan was to buy it piece by piece and totaly customize it but i think for a first time that may be way over my head for time and possibly money. I have a couple of friends who can do alot of the mechanical stuff on harleys so if i get lost im not on my own, but im gonna try to do everything as independantly as possible. So what I thought about doing was buying another bike, completely disassembling it, and simply reassembling it on my frame, adding or subtracting peices here or there that i do or dont like or that need repair. Then id sell the other frame and leftover peices. My first question is wether or not you think this is a good idea or not and what the pros and cons would be. Second question is what specific hd model bikes should I be looking at where the components would all fit on a softail frame. Ive been looking mostly at turn of the century fatboys, but didnt know if there were other styles that would work with the tank i already have, if certain models defintiely wont work with the frame, particular models you guys are keen on or ones to stay away from etc. any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!
If it is in fact an 02 frame...... Softail parts '00-06 are compatible. Stay away from Duece parts if you can. There were some oddball stuff that only worked on that model
The issue with swapping parts from one frame to another is registration. Check with the state regulations on registering the bike based on the frame. I assume you have a title for the frame.
they i was informed it worked was that once its al built, when i bring it intot he dmv theyll label it as a custom motrcycle and apply new numbers to the bike, thanks for the help i appreciate it
