I have a floor jack, but when my bike is up on it it creates a hell of a time getting those shocks off. Jack supports get in the way of loosening mount bolts, and then shocks can't drop because of the jack, either.
what do the rest of you do to get access to your shocks and R/R them when you need to?
Heres a picture of my bike up on automotive jack stands. When I was replacing shocks I just took out the jack in the center. The jack under the rear tire made it easy to go up or down to line up the shocks (Strap the rear tire to the jack if you do this to prevent slippage off the jack on the tire).
I have an engine guard, and that makes for a great resting place for the jack stands right where it bolts to the frame. I used some 2X6 boards and 4x4 post nailed togeather under the front tire (see above picture again).
The only difference on a 99 and earlier and a 2000 and up on the shocks is the older models use two eye holes to bolt up the shocks and the newer models use one eye hole (at swingarm) and one stud bolt to mount up to the frame. But other than that they should be the same. If you use the same setup like mine in the pics it was very stable, just use common sense when breaking the bolts lose and maybe even have a friend hold the bike to help stabilize the bike for safety. When you go back with the bolts be sure too use blue loctite.
