Default FLTSC Brakes

I have asked this question before when I first purchase this 2001 FLSTC Heritage, and got limited results. At first being that it was new to me and noisier than other bikes I have had in the past the answers give to me were that it was normal.

Last night on my way home it was quiet and I was the only one on the road. I was cruising along at about 50 and pull in the clutch and hear the "metal" sound from the front. I pull the front brake just a very little bit and the noise goes away. I pull harder and feel the braking taking place. I let go and the "metal" sound is back and get a slight pull to the brake again and it is quiet.

Is there some adjustment need to the caliper? I have noticed this from day one and still think that there is something that needs an adjustment. I have a service manual on order, but looking for a quick suggestion or advice on it. I know that it seems to be "dragging" the front brake a bit, and can hear it with the back brake as well. This morning bringing it into work, I did not notice it until after I used the front brake. Is it possible that it does this after it warms up? I know when I move the bike around in the garage I get the "metal" sound.

Please any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And again I am getting a service manual since I plan on doing some of my own work. I have worked on my past bikes and this one should not be any different!

I bought a 2000 FLSTC last year with 6900 miles on her. My first ride this year I too had a metal braking sound coming from the front. The pad thickness looked good, but I decided to pull the caliper off and take a look. The brake pads looked.....well I call it crusty looking. They where all pitted and cracked.

I cleaned up the calipers with brake cleaner. Put new brake pads in and put very very small amount of lube on the brake pad backing plate contact points where it contacts the calipers and much better. The front brakes take the most abuse from braking and wear and break down more. Buy a maintenance manual too.
