This might be a dumb question but I have a SE stage 1 AC that was put on my Heritage new in 2004. I believe the older SE AC's get oiled, is that right? Were tyhe older AC filters K & N or were they SE? I know the new ones say they don't have to be oiled. How can I tell if my filter is K & N? Thanks
I have a '05 and No my first se stage 1 was a white paper filter. You can buy just the filter from your local autoparts store withe having to buy another stage 1 kit.
This should be what you're looking for K&N part # HD 0800... and get yourself a cleaning kit also
Had the K&N under the Football filter and it was good and all but the SE heavybreather is esthetically appealing and seems to deliver great torque in the low and top end.

this is where it get confussing,,, the SE filter is made by K&N for HD,,,,,but its not the lifetime one,, U can wash the SE one but only a few times and it by-by,,,
I found this out in 08 when HD recalled and replaced the SE filter I got with the STG1 kit,, but for $18 more I could replace it with a lifetime real K&N one....... it was a no brainer......
The latest addition to K&N's RK Series was developed to get more horsepower from your Twin CamŽ Harley-DavidsonŽ engine. Built around the legendary K&N High-Flow Air Filter, the new RK Series assembly includes an innovative powder coated billet aluminum backplate that eliminates external breathers and features a built-in, dyno-tuned velocity stack. The result is a significant airflow increase to the engine without sacrificing filtration. This RK Series assembly retains a factory appearance by utilizing the stock air cleaner cover.

I did more research after I asked my question about remapping and found:
1. HD contracted with K&N to make the SE filters.
2. In 2005 HD stopped having K&N make the filters, having another company make them, cheaper and with a paper element.
3. HD held the patent for the filter K&N was making for them and kept K&N from making it themselves for awhile.
Since your bike is a 2004 you probably have a K&N made SE filter. If the rubber seal ring on your filter is black, you have a K&N filter. If it's blue, you have the cheaper made filter.
The one on my '02 was on it when I bought it back in Jan., and has the black seal ring. Lucky me!!
Thanks for all the replies! What about the larger capacity 3910 vs. the smaller 3909. Shouldn't I just buy the 3910? Also, I will probably be putting bigger cams in my bike when I get from Sturgis.
I went a different way on my 2010 Street Glide when I had the stage II 103 build done. Used the SE backing plate, Zippers' filter upgrade (bigger element, better flow) and the stock foot ball cover. Wanted the free breathing of the high performance filter while maintaining the stock appearance (even left the 96 inch label on the air filter).
Will probably get the Zippers' upgrade for the 2006 Street Bob I just bought also.
How can I tell if my bike has a stage 1 the dealer said it was .there is no plastic black PCM behind it so I'm thinking it is .will I see any difference putting a k&n filter in
