Default Newb Here Regarding Stage 1

Hey guys, Proud new owner of a 2008 FLPH 103. I am somewhat confused in regards to this stage 1 stuff. My question: I want to perform a stage modification to my bike and retain the original air filter cover. Does K&N make a complete stage 1 system or just the air filter? If so does anyone have the part number? Or, what is the best way to perform a Stage 1 mod on my bike.
What the hell is a Stage 1? Seems my local Harley Service manager is a bit of a *** when it comes to newb asking questions!

Sorry to sound new and probably redundant!

Welcome to the Forum from Colorado!
Stage 1 generally includes an open type air cleaner element and aftermarket exhaust and some would include an aftermarket fuel controller.
You can get a complete Stage 1 intake from H-D, but I would suggest DKCustoms, Arlen Ness Big Sucker or another. Exhaust is up to you. Plenty of choices out there. You'll get plenty of help spending your $$$$ in here!

Stage 1 refers to the HD stage of upgrades. Other manufactures may have them and if they do, it could be similar or contain different components. K&N only makes filters and does not have "staged" kits. HD's stage 1 consist of new intake, new exhaust, and a remap. IIRC, it's actually slipons and not a full system for pipes. The remap isn't required, but you'll be running a little more lean as you have more air passing through the motorcycle and the same amount of fuel being injected into the engine.

Usually it's missing the black back piece that's stock on the filter housing. Should be easy enough to tell by just removing the filter and looking at it. Do you also hae pipes on the bike? If you upgrade the filter you may see a tiny HP increase on a dyno or a smoother hp/tq curve, but it's not something you'll be able to feel. Hell, I upgraded from an 88 to a 95 with new cams and can barely tell a difference.

Wow, really?!
No offense meant, but I went from 88" to 98" and cams and from a nice cruiser to a (relative) rocket ship!

Thanks for clearing the K&N staged kit for me. I will price a HD stage 1, and go from there. Thanks again

I'm using a canned map too. I'm waiting to get a tune done until I can get my heads this winter. It's quicker than stock, but it still doesn't compare to my 120hp/75ft/lb tq RC51 for pulling power.
