I have an 05 Standard the problem I have is the powder coating on the oil tank is starting to come off and it's chrome underneath, is it possible to remove the rest of the powdercoating? I wanted to buy a chrome one but if I can remove the powdercoating I will.. Thanks Vic G.
Yes you can get it off, but it's not going to be a simple thing, lots of effort involved.
And if I were you I would wait till next winter when you'll have a lot of down time to do it.
Just getting the tank out is a PITA, then your still looking a a bunch of effort to get the PC off.
It may be a lot of effort for no good in the end as I heard a rumor that the tanks are all chromed at the factory. But any that don't pass inspection because of defective chrome get powdercoated instead of rechromed.
Probably better that way, and while your at it you might look into new hoses.
Its not unheard of for the old fittings to crap out on you when you try to reuse them.
Besides if you have the same lines on your bike that are on mine, they are not really 'braided', just covered up rubber.
man we coat a TON of softail oil tanks due to poor powder... sad only safe way to remove it is to get the oil tank off the bike, you can spray gasket stripper on it to remove it, let me guess under he powder does not look like it was blasted right? poor prep work = crap powder
