Default 2011 Changes

Some subtle, and not so subtle, changes for 2011 Softail/Heritage.

ABS option - much appreciated, but it's bundled with the security system. $1,195 instead of $895 for ABS only as on last year's ABS touring bikes. I'd like to have it, but not enough to upgrade my bike and take the resale hit.

The display adds some new features - apparently there is an option to read RPMS and gear selection directly on the display. Not sure if it is a toggle, like the clock and trip odomoter settings, or if there is a light on the display - like the way the "6" lights up when you're in sixth gear. It also looks like they've toned down the script to be a bit easier to read.

Some color changes - I'm not sold yet on the yellow, but it will be hard to argue that "I didn't see it" from mindless cagers.

Other than that, I didn't see very much. Wheels look the same, so do the bags and everything else. Can't tell if they changed the engine mapping, but I expect that the AFR remains where it was for EPA reasons - no real relief for hot engines at idle. I thought they may have added the rear cylinder shutoff from the touring bikes, but I didn't see any mention of it on the website.

The price seems to be the same as last year - good if you're buying the new bike, not so good if you're trying to sell or trade for a new bike.

I wonder if it is possible to get the ABS installed on a 2009?
anyone have any thoughts on that?

I noticed there was no Softail Custom this year. They finally got rid of all the classic skinny tire softails. The only skinny tire softail is the Rocker C now, maybe they'll bring one back in the next year or two.

Speaking of AFR. What is the EPA set AFR on Harley's bikes? By the way, the sixth gear light has been on the Heritage for at least two years now.

That might be the only thing the MOCO did right.

GMan -

The AFR is 14.6 for the 96 engine - I don't know what it is for the other engines. That's about the same ratio as a car engine, but on a bike with the engine between your legs it gets pretty hot. I was surprised that they didn't offer the ability to turn off the rear cylinder through the throttle, like they do on the touring bikes.

I know about the 6th gear light on the dash, but the HD website indicated that the 2011 Softail line has an "auxiliary" indicator that tells what gear you're in (any gear, not just 6th) and also has the ability to display the engine RPMs (I assume it's part of the display that you cycle through for time, trip odometer, etc.).
