I'll add this too... a 88 bumped up to a 95 with a set of cams will easily pass my 96. Not for much longer though

The 96 needs a stg1 and cams to breath and run cool. Also need the cams makes 6th gear useable.. No issues with tensioners... still not a lot if any faster than = equipped 88"

A little UP for EFI over the beloved Carb:

Not having to idle for 10 minutes in the cold before taking off without a stall.

On the other side, my carbed 1200 Sporty did run cooler than my EFI 96b, especially in slow-speed events like parades.

Something to keep an eye on but not a must right away.
Both are great motors. If you find a good deal with either one go for it.

I've heard this before.....there must be something wrong with my bike. I don't have upgraded cams and 6th gear works just fine in mine.

I'm a fan of the 96. Combined with the 6 speed transmission, I find it a more versatile powertrain.

The 96 does run hotter, but I installed an XiED modification that made a big difference. It now runs a lot cooler and doesn't require me to shift as often. Best of all it's a low cost fix - under $125.

You can read my XiED mod comments in the Softail section - just search under my name.
