Thats the problem. Most Harley Davidson owners changed out to the Boxer type engine.

Ya know, having owned a 312whp Subaru, I kinda like that idea. Hell, they make ATVs with the EJ25t motor already.

I ended up buying a ThunderMax and with a little help from them tuned my own.....now runs great. Last dyno run HD did showed 76hp but popped all the time. Now it runs much smoother with my tuning (ThunderMax) and a little more power, although I haven't put it on a dyno. The additional HP makes 6th gear more usable in that it doesn't lug between 55-60 where much of my riding is done. Before the Thundermax 6th preformed best 60+ but never saw a need for a cam although I'm sure the additional HP gained with the right cam would give the same results as a good stage 1 like I did with the TMax.

Who are you..... the search police?
If everyone just used the search function and never started any new threads there would be nothing to read here on a day to day basis and everyone would be getting the information from 2003 .
And that's assuming the search function actually worked the way its supposed to.....which most of the time it doesn't.

This is the simplest answer that I've ever had to give. The 96 is a piece of ****, hands down.

both engines are very similiar but,I wouldn't buy another Harley with a carb, they sit way too long(causing problems) and carbs definitely don't like ethanol.I recommend getting the newest ride you can afford

I didn't say 6th gear wouldn't work,, I said Cams will make it Useable!!!

First I ride Two up with the Wife 95% of the time and we total about 400#'s, NOT solo dude at 150#'s, which would make a difference.

Pre Cams, in 6th gear she always felt like she was LABORING, like always needed a little gas to stay a steady speed.

Faults IMO with stock or even STG1 96''er....
1. Not enough TQ to pull her smoothly/easy in stock form in 6th.
2. Also my Mileage always dropped 3-4 MPG on trips using 6th ridding 60-65mph. (down to 38-39mpg). VS, using 5th and ridding between 55-60 MPH, (41-42mpg). Again, IMO that proves that 6th gear is just too tall for the stock motor.

After Cams.!!!
Positives..
1. 15%-20% more TQ across the RPM"s
2. More passing Power now in 6th at 60MPH than before in 5th at 55MPH.
3. Engine Oil is now 20* cooler..
4. Fuel Mileage now increased Using 6th gear from 38-39mph (Pre-cams) to 45-48 mpg all the time now on trips.. and she'll pull 60 MPH in 6th, even two-up easy all day long..
THAT'S between 6-10 better MPG after CAMS using 6th gear anywhere from 60 -up MPH, How can U can't argue with that.!!!!!..

IMO it's one of those things U have to experience to really believe it..
U won't believe it till U put in some cams..

If U just putt around town or just do bar hop type ridding,, Then fine.. U don't need them..

But if U do any serious road trips loaded up then U won't be sorry U had some put in.

Yeah,, I've added a bunch of Bling,, but IMO the best Money I've spent IMO is for the STG1, Cams, and Dyno... Period..

Also I really think it'll make our Engine last a lot longer by running cooler.

All of this Is just,, . But it's worked for 6yrs and 41k now and she just gets stronger and better every YR..
