Engine noise
Did u just change to syn oil? most get a little more noise when they do.
Also as above, if U have changed gas.? could also be ping if so..
If not,..... there's the compensator down there that can make a similar sound.
My sewing machine got a lot louder too after the cam install.
Before the cams I had a PCIII and did have a spark knock issue for awhile. I only noticed it under a pretty good load, and at high rpm. A little tweaking of the spark advance cured that. Gas is crap these days.
My 2009 fatboy with 2200 miles sings the same song….like two coins being tapped together. I’ve only noticed it in the last few weeks. I switched to Amsoil at 1600 miles, but I’d be surprised if that has much to do with it.
From what I can tell it happens after the motor has warmed up and generally right after I up shift and accelerate. I ride my bike in the torque curve and the tapping seems to happen in the low to mid range. Cruising/steady throttle, or decelerating, I hear nothing but the symphony of the big v-twin. This bugs me quite a bit too, I'll need to figure this one out....

I've seen a lot of complaints with the same syptoms after 5 thou on the stock compensator.
But if you are running cheap gas, it could be ping (similar sound).
Luckily the heavey SE comp don't cost very much.
Sure did solve my woes!
The dealer, over the phone, thinks its the hyraulic tensioner lagging behind thats causing the noise and believes it will settle in time.
I'm not so sure and cant see how it went in for its service with no noise and came out with.
It could be crap fuel, but I always buy from reputable garages
Having said that, this morning I had every intention of taking the bike to the dealers for one of the mechanics to listen to. I had run it right down on the fuel to the point that the little yellow light was glowing. I put some of the petrol that I keep in a jerry can for the lawn mower in, just to get me to a petrol station and then went to my nearest, which happened to be at the Tesco's super market. ( One which I never use )
Oh yes, sods law, not a ting, ping, tap or rattle could be heard, just the rumble of the HD engine in perfect tune. I even tried to force it but it was having none of it. 10 miles, nothing. 'Bugger'
I think I'm going to put in a higher octain grade fuel for a while to see if that has any impact, on keeping the ting, ping, tap & rattle away, in which case it could be bad fuel, or is the bike just having a laugh with me.
Ride safe
