Poping on decel-pipe change
Bike is 04 heritage-fi.I got it used with 7100 miles. It has the screaming eagle mufflers, and the screaming eagle air kit with what looks like a k&n air filter. The header pipes are tight.
It pops/sputters on decel, not a backfire.Bike runs great and gets around 47-49 mpg.
The harley shop says it probably needs the correct download.
If I go to the stock air filter,do you think that would help.I am 67 years and like to just cruise around.Don't need performance other than stock.
The screaming eagle slip-ons are a little high pitch for my old ears, but would like something between the stock and the eagles.Suggestions.
Thanks
Jim

Its very easy to change the AC try it and see if it solves the problem.Check all the exhaust fittings for leaks as well.If all is good I would skip on any download they offer and go with some sort of fuel tuner instead.Ive heard of some bikes even with the correct fuel tuner or download and pipes ,a/c still having somme decel pop.Or you could just check the plugs make sure you are not running too lean.If not just ride it the way it is if it doesnt bother you too much.Or try a set of XIEDS had them on my sportster and loved them.As you can see you have a few options
Agree w/Malingerer, you've either got a leak somewhere in the exhaust, or excess fuel burn-off. I have the Dobeck TFI & it's one of the easiest/cheapest on market. Not really trying to push their product - it's pretty much plug & play. Good luck!
If you bought it with the pipes, a/c and exhaust it most likely has the download. Get a decent tuner for it and that should fix it unless it is an exhaust leak. My bike had a similar config on it when I bought it and it popped real bad. I added a power commander and the popping went away.

I don't think changing your A/C will get rid of your popping on decel. After you have ruled out any exhaust leaks I would consider putting on a decent tuner like was mentioned in an earlier post. I wouldn't let the dealer do any downloads. With a tuner like a Power Commander you can add a little fuel to the 0% throttle positions until your popping goes away. I started a little high, like with a value of 20...rode the bike..no popping....back on the laptop and changed the vaules down to 18...rode the bike, no popping...back to the garage and on the laptop and down to 15...same procedure again,, down to 13 and my popping returned..back up to 15 and all is well. It's pretty easy to do, good luck.

Yes, I agree with Soft06. While I don't have scientific data, my opinion (along with many others) is that decel popping is from a lean condition. The dealer will more than likely set the bike up to EPA standards which is on the lean side of the fence. Changing the AC to a new clean one will make the bike run even leaner. Changing to stock will make the bike richer but the mileage and performance will be lower. Even moving to a lower elevation will make the bike run leaner (my own personal experience when having the bike dyno'd in the mountains and then moving to the south).
Going in a different direction is going to start getting into some bucks. If you still have the stock pipes, there is a company that is converting them to higher performance for not too much money that may solve both of your problems... lean and tone... because they aren't quite as free flowing as say, Bubbs or V&H. If you want to pick and choose what you want in terms of pipes, looks, performance, and sound then you need to get a better than cheap ECM add on or ECM replacement so that the bike can be properly tuned.
Go to a big rally and listen for what you like. After you hear it, find out what it is and if it is available for your bike.
