Need some help from you pros... Thinking about adding the Screaming Eagle intake and a tech told me I could go ahead and install it and then wait and see if my bike needs the chip upgrade, I'm not buying that line? Riding a 2013 Roadglide with 10,000 miles on it so far.
I wouldn't install a high flow air cleaner without tuning the bike. The damn things run lean enough in stock trim, if you add more air without adding more fuel it can only get leaner. Some will say if you leave the stock exhaust and only change the AC you will be ok, and you might but I would not trust it on my bike. I think a completely stock bike will benifit from a tuner..
The bike will run to lean without the ECM recalibration. Also it increases the RPMs of the rev limiter. The Stage 1 is mostly a band aid, and a generic tune, but is suitable for most applications without a lot of specialized parts added to the system.
I believe you will need a tune, however he is right. You can install it and will know within the first ride whether you need a tune or not. If you are going to spend the money on a tuner and tune, you should wait until you install pipes if your thinking about doing that
The bike should be able to adjust for the added air but it will still be running lean. If you decide to tune it, tune it but don't get the chip upgrade (download). Spend a couple extra hundred and get a proper tuner. You could also go on the cheap and get some FL-VIED's but a tuner is the best route.
If you are adding more air, you need to increase the fuel. You can get away from having to change the tune if you are just changing pipes alone, but not when you change to a high flow air cleaner. That said, even a bike in stock configuration will benefit from a good tune.
I would definitely either have the dealer remap or get some sort of piggyback. I installed a screamin eagle ventilator and went for a short ride (5 min) to warm up the bike so I could change the oil. When I pulled in the garage my bike smelled like something was burning up. Not sure if it was the slip ons or motor. Not worth taking any chances...
