Unhappy Not starting

My 89 Custom won't start when it is cold. And by cold, I mean sitting awhile, not cold outside. The starter engages, but won't turn the engine over. When I finaly get it started and to full operating temp, I can shut it off and it cranks right back up on the first press. Replaced the battery two weeks ago, and battery tender says it is fully charged. I have searched this site, but couldn't get an exact example of my problem. Got a big run next weekend, sure would like to go.......

If ya got the spark you should have. Check the fuel pump.. If that's OK check the fuel filter! Check the plugs for crud build up... Plug wires and make sure the battery had a good ground.

I am going to replace the battery cables today. I can make my own at work. If they are good enough to start and aircraft, they must be good enough for a bike.

That all good for a motor thats turning over but not firing......

he's having issues with it not turning over...

So the ground is one to check,, starter probs is another.

Check out he Tech areas on elc and motor issues also.

I am almost sure it's the starter now. The battery was fully charged, and even gave it a jump to be sure. Still no start. I put it in 5th gear, and pushed the button. It would lurch forward, so I know that it's engaging. I guess the starter just doesn't have enough power to turn it over. I kept trying, and it finally started. I road around the trailerhood for about 15min and shut it off. It cranked right back up, but the starter/gears grinded a little when it did engage. So, it only starts when its hot.

Does this sound like the starter to yall? If so, should I replace the whole starter or just certain parts?

If the starter gear is grinding indicates it is likely worn out. Pull the starter and inspect it, or pull the Primary cover off and with the bike upright and in Neutral, bump the starter and observe the engagement.

Its the starter clutch located in the primary...sure of it based on the sounds then starting when hot... you wont need a whole new starter, probablyjust the starter clutchandf the gear ifits alltore up from spinning. My bikes in the shop right now having the exact same repairs. I just got a big bore put in so the additional complression did it... I dont think I will need a new started because it does start strong eventualy. Good Luck

I took the primary off yesterday, and bumped the starter. The jackshaft ingaged, but it wouldn't turn the motor. Acted like it didn't have enough power. Would that still be the starter clutch?

What is the shop charging you to replace the starter clutch? Are you going to a bigger starter? If so, what size?

Oh, and the gears looked good. No visible wear or damage. Only a small amount of metal on the magentic drain plug.
