I think that's a great deal. Always been fond of the Duece, almost bought one but couldn't pass up the FB at the time. That year has the good crank and cam bearings. Might want to take a look at the cam tensioners, some lasted longer than others. I changed my inner tensioner at 43,000 miles just to be safe, but the outside still looked like new.
Check the tires for dry rot and just make sure everything works and it runs great.
I had a carb'ed 01 for 4 years, from 03 to 07. Loved it, but kept adding touring-like gear to it, until I decided to just go touring. Then I missed the softail too much and went back.
Anyway, seems like a good price, and it was a great bike.
I traded in my '01 softail for a '10 Crossbones. The softail was flawless, with 38,000 miles and lots of upgrades. The stealer gave me $7,500 for a trade in. Looks like a good deal to me!
Thanks for the opinions. I generally buy used bikes, but not with over 20k miles on them. Not that a Deuce will not have many, many more miles to go, but I don't have experience buying a 10 year old bike.
The weather here sucks so I can't take a test ride today. Maybe tomorrow. Any other thoughts on problem areas for a Deuce that I should check carefully before pulling the trigger?
