I have a 1998 FLSTF. Everything is stock, cept for the SE slip-ons and a couple minor things.
The problem is noise comming from my front wheel at speeds from 28-31 mph. No noise from the wheel at any other speeds. It starts when I take off and starts at 28 and stops at 31, and when I slow down it starts at 31 and stops at 28. Also, it dosnt matter if its warm or cold.
Money is tight, so dealer is out. I can turn a wrench and am fully capable. I just need to know what to look for or where to start looking.
Noises are hard to nail down. I thought it was the front wheel on mine also, but I think it is the primary chain now. It has been doing it for a year and a half. Not loud, just sort of a whine comming from the front. I repacked the wheel brgs., and everything looked good. I also checked the primary chain adjustment, and it was OK.
what does the noise sound like?
I had one of my front brake pads dragging the rotor and I could only hear it at certain speeds.
Not sure why I couldn't hear it all the time.. Maybe wind noise or exhaust?
Get the front wheel in the air and spin it and see if the noise is there with nothing in the background to cancel it out.
About the only thing left would be the brake disc or pads. You could take off the front brake and tape it to your frame front, and then ride it to see if it still does it.
Ok, sounds good, something to check! I called teh guy I bought it from, he said he got aftermarket pads for it and could very welll be whats makin that noise. Hmm....Wonder why he didnt let me know that when I bought it.
Thanx for the ideas guys. Gonna check it this weekend.
