Not sure if Alien Spyder got his on yet, but I dropped my bike off today at the dealer for its 1000 mile checkup and the guy at the counter handed me a box with my new rack.
After I got the bike home, going the long way around naturaly, I started installing it.
Only took about an hour taking my time and tapeing everything up to prevent scratching the fender.
The instructions are fairly basic and its not hard to do if your at all handy. Drilling the two holes in the RIGHT spot could be a challenge because you have to do it at an angle. But its not hard if you think it through first.

After
The one thing that surprised me was the weight of the thing. Most "racks" that I have seen are made from thin wire or hollow tubing. This sucker is SOLID STEEL, and very heavy duty. It will handle far heavier loads than the fender or the plastic light assembly its bolted to.
Well, after all this, I ended up not installing the rack. I even went as far as to go to my dealers and buy Seat Bracket Kit P/N 52030-98. I didn't like the fact that I was going to have to change the seat bracket all the time. I swap seats on my bike all the time.
I decided I would rarly use the fender rack so I've decided to go with a different "sissy bar" rack. That way I can get a bag that slips over the back rest pad and rests on the rack.
I'm going to list the Bobtail Fender Rack and the Seat Bracket on Ebay.
I just looked at those pics you attached and was curious. Is there anything like a pad, washer, or something under that seat bracket to keep the metal tab from messing up that slick paint job.
The tins are from H-D, although I got them on Ebay for almost nothin. Their a limited edition set called "Alien Spider". They came in the original H-D boxes with the certificate of authenticity and as far as I could tell, they hade never been mounted and the tank had never had gas in it. Their tin set #08 of 50 made.
The little seat bracket mounts under the seat and does not come in contact with the tins.
I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough in the question. I was referring to the seats mounting bracket that's shown in the pics. In the second one it appears to be laying directly on the painted fender surface.
In any event I got my rack from the dealer and along with the nuts and bolts you need the kit also contained a thin clear plastic stick on. The instructions tell you to stick it on the fenders painted surface under the mounting spacer to "insulate" it from actually touching the paint.
I didn't want to buy the bobtail fender for fear when I used bungees and the possibility of the cargo scratching the fender. Since I have a detachable sissy bar, I bought the new luggage rack from HD designed for the fat tire on my 06 FXSTI.
